The Journey from Head to Heart

By Kim Reichmuth, RCS Board of Trustees Chairperson

When I first got involved with the Resurrection Catholic School Board of Trustees about three years ago, I did so because it seemed like a logical use of my time, after retiring from over 35 years in banking. I certainly believed in everything the school stood for; my own kids had benefitted from a wonderful Catholic education, and I wanted to ensure that opportunity was provided to others, independent of economic status. I had studied all the facts and knew that children who were given the opportunity for a Catholic education were more likely to graduate from high school, and more likely to attend college……these seemed like noble causes, and something I hoped I could help the school achieve. So I applied to join the Board of Trustees because my head told me it was a logical thing to do.

Since that time I have had the opportunity to truly experience the difference that RCS makes in the lives of the children who attend, not based just on what they teach, but in the way they teach the kids to embrace learning and believe in themselves. No matter what the subject, there is a focus on developing positive self-esteem by working hard toward goals, and celebrating the accomplishments. These successes provide the confidence to move on to even more difficult challenges, learn from mistakes, and continue to learn and grow. Establishing this growth mindset, or belief in their own abilities and potential, is a powerful tool for future success. When you enter the school, it is the glowing smiles, and sense of pride that you feel from the students that tells you something special is happening here….long before you notice the Believe and Achieve banners and posters hanging on the walls.

I am thankful to the wonderful faculty and staff who are the heart of RCS and are truly making a difference in the lives of the children who attend. I am thankful for the parents, volunteers and donors, who give their time and financial support. I assure you, this is a wonderful investment that will provide long-term benefits. And I am thankful for my own RCS journey, which began within my head, and now is anchored in my heart.
